How to disable Intel Management Engine

Disabling the Intel Management Engine (ME) is a measure some users take for security and privacy reasons. There is concern that this feature could pose a security risk, allowing malicious actors to remotely access the system without the user's knowledge.

However, Intel warns that disabling ME may have unintended consequences, such as the loss of important functionalities or even incorrect system operation. Still, if you are considering disabling the Intel Management Engine, it's crucial to thoroughly research the implications and assess whether it's truly necessary for your specific case.

At Slimbook, we listen to our users and strive to provide them with all possible tools to make them feel valued. As part of this effort, we've released a new BIOS update that adds the functionality to disable Intel ME. This feature turns off the device in a similar manner to UEFI systems like Coreboot/Libreboot, but with the option to provide this choice to the end user, not just the UEFI compiler.

Remember to update your Slimbook's BIOS and EC by following our tutorial on How to update BIOS and EC on your Slimbook.

To disable Intel ME, you'll need to access the BIOS and then deactivate the "ME State," as shown in the images below:

For AMI BIOS:

For insyde BIOS:

If you're a Windows user, Intel ME will no longer appear in the list of hardware devices. If you're a Linux user, various scripts won't be able to communicate with it because it's turned off at the motherboard level.

Currently, the models compatible with this function are:

- Slimbook Executive 14" 13 Gen
- Slimbook Executive 16" 13 Gen
- Slimbook Executive 14" 12 Gen
