Yes, you read that right. We are the first distribution based on Ubuntu 24 LTS that lets you choose between the new Plasma 6 desktop or the stable Gnome 46.

Motivation
In September 2019, after four years of listening to your requests, we did something we didn’t want to do: launch our own version of Ubuntu. We didn’t want to flood the market with more distributions, but we gave in to the need of several users who wanted a version to reinstall their computer, already optimized and with our pre-installed programs.In September 2024, we’ve made a big change in the philosophy of our distribution: improve Ubuntu and offer it to any user, whether or not they are a Slimbook customer.
Our goal is to improve it, removing from Ubuntu what we don’t like and adding what we believe makes it more functional and enhances the user experience. We pay close attention to what the community has been asking for years.
We are ready to rock!
Optimization
A clear example that this is not just a cosmetically modified Ubuntu but an optimized Ubuntu can be easily seen. As of today, the download size of the Ubuntu ISO is 5.8 GB and includes only one desktop. Meanwhile, our ISO with a single desktop would weigh 2.8 GB, but since we offer it with two desktops, it weighs 4.3 GB. It’s still 1.5 GB lighter than Ubuntu!
Why? Because we compile Ubuntu's source code without snap and without what, based on our experience, is unnecessary. This results in a lighter, more optimized system. And on top of that, we’ve included more programs than Ubuntu, based on our list of essential or highly recommended software.
Customization
Do you enable privacy by default in your Firefox browser? We already serve it activated, unlike other distributions.
Do you prefer to install .deb packages or Flatpak packages? We’ve integrated Flatpak management and prioritized Gnome and Plasma’s app store and repositories to make it easier for you to install what you like.
Want a more refined look with our colors or wallpapers? Of course, we’ve got you covered.
Do you want tiled windows, a more efficient launcher, or a copy history? All this and more is included.

Does this mean our computers will no longer work well with other distributions?
Of course not! Our computers will continue to work with other distributions like before. We’ll keep striving to ensure our devices are compatible with dozens of Linux distributions, so don’t worry.
Will our programs work on other distributions?
Yes, absolutely! Our intention is to keep porting our apps to other distributions.
And remember, all help is welcome! Some ports of our apps have been born from the community.
It’s true that we still need to completely rewrite several of our programs, and now that we’ve launched Slimbook OS, we can dedicate more time to them :)
