Slimbook Creative 2026 graphics driver problems solved (Slimbook OS 24 r126 -> r127)

Hi

I hope my journey will help others. When my Creative laptop arrived (the new one with NVIDIA RTX 5070) and completing the last setup steps of user creation, the display would not want to come up. At that point, it was the older distro r126 of Slimbook OS. Rather soon I found out that switching the bios parameters for the graphics card from MSHybrid to dGPU mitigated some problems, but then the screen would not want to turn on after sleep or hibernate.

The solution for me was finally:

- fresh install of Slimbook OS 24 r127 (only 5 days old at this post), erasing the initial installation

- update the system:

$ sudo apt update

$ sudo apt upgrade

- check the recommended drivers

sudo ubuntu-drivers devices

=> the recommended nvidia driver was listed among many others and turned out to be nvidia-driver-595-open:

sudo apt install nvidia-driver-595-open

=> reboot

All is working fine now, MSHybrid can be active (only kicks in the nvidia card when its needed) and the display neatly comes back after sleep or hibernate

Happy Slimbook Creative user now!

Kind regards

Paul

Hi Paul,

I had exactly the same problem as you and I fixed it thanks to the advice of the Slimbook tech support and your post, so thank you very much !

However, now that I've reinstalled the OS, I often have glitches on the screen (I mean pixels of random colours that return to normal in just a few frames), eg when alt+tabbing quickly, when playing some games, when someone is typing a message to me on discord, very random stuff, I can't identify a pattern at all. It started happening after I applied the fix to the dGPU/MSHybrid problem, and it doesn't happen in dGPU mode. I was wondering if you or anyone else on this forum was having the same problem ? It's not a huge bother but it's still quite ugly. I have no idea what could cause this or how to fix it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Bob

I have not experienced the glitches you describe, but my use is different (not played games so far), I use the processing power for astrophotography processing. I also tried the fast switching with alt-tabbing, but have not seen any annoying glitches either. What else did you get from tech support that I may try to reproduce?

Kind regards

Paul

Hi Paul,

Astrophotography? That sounds really lovely, I've never done any myself but I sure love the images you can see online.

I didn't discuss this particular issue yet with tech support, only the part where ... well MSHybrid was not working at all ;). Maybe they will see our conversation next week and answer me. If not, I will simply contact them with the ticket system.

Actually, the glitches appear eg when you hold alt and press tab rapidly (it's not the only way, but it's one easy way to see them). What I also remarked which surprised me is that when I record the screen via Spectacle (logo+shift+s), the glitches appear while I record, but they're not actually visible on the recording itself when I play it back. I'm not tech-savvy enough to know whether that's obvious, or helpful, or anything.

Thanks for your answer and have a good one. Kind regards,

Bob

PS About the screen recording thing : nevermind, they actually are visible on the recording lol. Maybe I did it wrong when I tried it last time.

Hello again,

Setting Adaptive Sync to "Always" in System Settings>Display & Monitor>Display Configuration actually fixes the bug, it seems. If anyone else has these glitches, I recommend trying this.

(also the glitches are indeed invisible in the screen recording, but playing the recording with Spectacle creates glitches, I guess because of the animation of the cursor moving to the right or something... anyway sorry for the confusion about this)

Kind regards,

Bob
