Hi,
I have noticed this behavior twice now, both times after about 7 days of uptime, and it leaves me a little puzzled...
For no apparent reason, the background activity went up, with the cores alternating between 100 % and the usual ~ 3 % in idle rapidly. I could see that in system monitor, but when I checked the processes, all looked normal with no process >2 % processor load. The system was getting notably slower though. I tried logging out and back in, but that didn't fix the problem. After the next wake-up from standby (lid closed and opened again), the GUI was unusable with ~ 1-2 s between mouse pointer updates. I restarted the system, which removed the symptoms, and the system is back to normal for now.
During shutdown I noticed some unusual messages and
journalctl -b -1 | grep hog
gave me
Jan 13 09:50:21 name_of_system kernel: workqueue: dm_irq_work_func [amdgpu] hogged CPU for >10000us 4 times, consider switching to WQ_UNBOUND
Jan 13 09:51:14 name_of_system kernel: workqueue: dm_irq_work_func [amdgpu] hogged CPU for >10000us 5 times, consider switching to WQ_UNBOUND
As it has happened twice now and the Internet was not exactly helpful: any pointers?
Thanks,
Philipp
