Linux Mint 22.1 native power profiles conflict with bios profiles

Hi there!

I recently updated Linux Mint to 22.1, which includes a native power profile. You can choose between battery saving, balanced, and performance. Apparently it does conflict with TLP and also with auto-cpufreq, two tools commonly used in Linux laptops for better battery mamagement (https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/1i5zz2j/comment/m8bhldh/)

My question is, does this new native power management conflict with the slimbook power profiles from the bios, the ones you can change with F5? What about the nvidia profiles that appear on the intel applet?

I am using an Exectutive but I guess this applies to other models as well.

Thanks!

Hello, pablogila,

Our performance adjustment method involves modifying the TDP. I don’t think Linux Mint can do that; instead, it likely focuses on adjusting the CPU frequency. Therefore, these changes are isolated and shouldn’t interfere with each other.

For example, if you have the Balanced mode enabled in the BIOS (or switched with F5), which I believe sets the TDP to 45W for the CPU and 70W for the GPU, the Linux Mint profile would adjust the frequency based on the BIOS-configured TDP. It doesn’t change the TDP itself but rather the frequency.

I hope this clarifies your questions. If not, don’t hesitate to ask again.

Best regards,
