Slimbook Hardware Config (Pre-purchase Guide)

How do you configure a Slimbook for privacy? First you need to consider your needs.

THE IDEAL BUILD

The most private setup is to disable both Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Camera, Microphone and Sound. And of course make sure to ask to get all other hardware telemetry disabled. Be it AMD, Nvidia or Intel. (I would like to say disabling sound isn't that important for privacy unless you are in a public area most of the time you use your computer)

THE MINIMUM BUILD

The minimum is to disable hardware telemetry, if you do use an internal microphone and the internal camera, it is not a disaster but in that case you got to take measures. On my Slimbook Creative, there is a build-in camera cover which, if the camera was not disabled, would be my way of blocking it.

MY BUILD

I got hardware telemetry disabled, I got microphone and camera disabled and bluetooth is disabled. I did consider running a cable to my desk for LAN connection so I could actually disable Wi-Fi but I don't think Wi-Fi needs to be disabled. Why would someone disable radios anyways? Well because every radio is exploitable in some way. With that said, you need to consider your own needs not mine and consider too how paranoid you are about these things.

CONSIDERATIONS
  • To disable Wi-Fi is obviously going to give you no wireless connection. Only do this if you actually don't need Wi-Fi.

  • To disable Bluetooth is not as extreme as going with Wi-Fi and the solution is easy, using cables. Depending on what kind of things you have, you may have to get uncommon cables.

  • To disable microphone and camera isn't as extreme as you'd think. In practice you could get a wired web-cam and a wired microphone. This is obviously not for people on a budget but it would work.

  • Another thing to remember is, unless you actually physically disconnect the cables from the things you are trying to disable, you can in fact always toggle them in the BIOS on a Slimbook. A neat thing in my opinion since you could try and live without these connections and then when you get tired of it just boot  into the BIOS and re-enable what you are missing.

BLUETOOTH

Ask yourself "Do I use Bluetooth?", "Could I live without Bluetooth?". You can often replace Bluetooth with a cabled solution. Some of my devices does use Bluetooth but they all have a cable option too.

PRINTER

I have a printer that does have Bluetooth but since I don't use Bluetooth, I had to find a solution. My solution came from opening the lid on the back finding a USB-B port. I had a USB-B to USB-A cable laying around so I used that.

SPEAKER

I do own a speaker too but I actually just use that with my phone even if it does run Bluetooth. I never connect it to my computer but I would cable it if I did. With that said I don't own a microphone but if I did it too would be cabled.

WI-FI

Disabling Wi-Fi is the big one. I realise that people don't usually use LAN unless they're on desktop but on a Laptop, I would only disable Wi-Fi if I knew I had a table in reach of the router whereever I go. I think if you are on a laptop and don't have a good reason to disable Wi-Fi then keep it on.

CAMERA & MICROPHONE

Disabling the camera and microphone is a pretty good privacy practice, but only if you don't use the internal components. If you do use the internal components but have money, you could buy a good pair of wired earphones for cheap.

Since wired earphones don't have to have Bluetooth, they can come with a high sound quality that matches wireless headphones that cost 10 times more. I used to own a pair of Sony WF-1000XM3, these were the high-end model at the time. After I lost them I bought wired earphones from JBL. The Sony pair costed over $300 while the JBL costed around $25 but the finest thing here is that the JBL has nearly the same quality of sound. So that upgraded my privacy and didn't hit my wallet as hard.

As for the microphone, again consider if you use it. I normally just use my phone to communicate over voice instead of my computer.

SOUND

I would disable sound if I was in public the whole time or if you don't want to use your computer for sound related things. Otherwise not. I put on videos to play as I do things and the internal speakers in a Slimbook are good enough for that. Generally, I think it is advisable to keep your sound on.

SHOULD YOU DISABLE?

Well, that depends on what you are going for. Here is a list of things to disable for best privacy:

  • Any hardware telemetry - ask Slimbook, they have great knowledge on this. (ALWAYS)

  • Microphone and camera (Most cases)

  • Bluetooth (Most cases)

  • Wi-Fi (Optional but disable if you know you can have a LAN connection at all time)

  • Sound (Optional)
