KDE Slimbook V: Problem with USB-C—USB-C cable and charging

Hi

Since the USB-C—USB-C charger cable that was included with the KDE Slimbook V laptop was only 2m long and quite short, I decided to buy a new one of 3m. But the problem with the new one does not charge the laptop at all. On any of the two USB-C ports. I am still using the same brick (that big part you stick into electrical socket). Just the cable is different. It doesn't charge the laptop even if I put it into the power saving mode, and turn of the screen and do nothing, or even in sleep mode. And I am sure it should not be using a lot of Watts in such state so there should at least be some charging going on, even if it is not the max 100W charging. The cable charges smartphones and other devices just fine.

Did I miss something? Should the cable be something special and not any generic USB-C—USB-C is compatible?

Hello, @JRepin,

Not all cables are certified for PD 3.0 100W functionality, especially when they’re as long as 3 meters.

To have a longer cable, we recommend getting this type of USB-C charger.
https://slimbook.com/en/shop/product/slb-powers-hky-usb-c100w-wwu-ac-adapter-usb-c-100w-gan-wold-wide-use-excalibur-amd-prox-amd5700u-1355#attr=

It’s modular and allows you to connect a figure-8 power connector. It has been tested and works 100%.

Best regards.

What about sleep mode? When in sleep mode the laptop should not be using 100W, I think it is not even 10W and any cable should be able to charge when laptop is in sleep? And even when using it normally and in power saving mode it should be using less then 100W more like 50W I would say. I think 100W is only when playing games and in performance mode and when integrated GPU and CPU are both 100% in use and when laptop monitor is at 100% brightness. So why does it not charge at all in sleep mode and in low power/usage case? It should charge at least slowly, not nothing at all.

Hello, @JRepin,

The issue is not the power but the charger's voltage. It needs to be 100W or multiples of 20V. For example, if the charger outputs 20V-3A (60W), it should charge correctly at 60W. However, if the charger outputs 12V-5A, it won’t reach the voltage required by the Excalibur to charge properly.

This is why it is essential to use a charger that complies with the PD 3.0 (Power Delivery 3.0) standard, as it dynamically negotiates the voltage based on the connected device's requirements.

I hope this information is helpful.

Best regards.
