Excalibur AMD8 touchpad multitouch is... Strange?

Avatar

Hi!

A couple of days ago I started using an Excalibur AMD8. Everything is working fine, but touchpad multitouch is, for a lack of better words, strange. Scrolling works most of the time, but sometimes switches to cursor move and back to scrolling, completely unprovoked. Kernel version or OS don't matter (I use Arch/Hyprland btw, but I also tried it in Mint/Gnome and Win11 installer - same thing). I couldn't figure out what's happening exactly, but now I think I got it:

It seems that if, during the gesture, your fingertips get too close to each other the touchpad switches from multitouch to singletouch and when you get them apart again, back to multitouch. I tried running libinput debug and the touch merging and unmerging is clearly visible. I tried it on other touchpads and there is no touch merging no matter how close I get my fingers. I don't think it's a HW problem, my guess is that EC/firmware is defining the touch zones that are too wide.

The question is if someone could take a look at it I guess?

PS. Great notebook, props to Slimbook :)

Hello Dpredovic,

I imagine you’ve removed the protective plastic film from the touchpad; otherwise, I suggest doing so.

Best regards.

Hi,

sure, I removed it before turning it on. :)

Mine has a similar behavior, which reduces touchpad precission and usefulness a lot. This should be addressed, please.

Adding to this, there is a delay when using tap-and-drag there is a significant delay: I have to tap, wait some miliseconds, then drag so the window will move. If I tap and inmediately drag, the window doesn't move. Every other touchpad I've used has no delay on tap-and-drag.

My Excalibur touchpad also has similar behaviour. Multitouch indeed sometimes turns into single touch, often when moving the cursor there is unintentional tapping and the touchpad is not very precise. Working with it is uncomfortable and frustrating with all the unintended drag and drops. It would be great if something could be done to improve this.

My Excalibur's touchpad is frustrating to use, so much that I almost always use a mouse. I don't really know how to describe the problem other than I have to repeat clicks and gestures in order for them to be successful.  I have to be VERY deliberate, otherwise the input is not executed.

Hello to everyone,

We apologize for the delay in our response. We are aware of your concern regarding the touchpad on your Excalibur. Please review the following video, where you can confirm that the touchpad performs all the mentioned functions.

https://youtu.be/g8uwPi48FDU

If the touchpad is functioning correctly, the erratic behavior may be related to a software issue, as we have been informed that it can occur in certain kernel versions. We are confident that this issue will be resolved soon.

Although the touchpad kernel driver is not directly developed by us, we are investigating possible solutions. While we cannot provide a specific timeline, we assure you that we are working on it.

Best regards and happy holidays.

All the gestures work, until the touchpad decides to do something else.

This is not a kernel or driver issue. The touchpad has the exact same behavior with all kernel versions I tried, all desktop environments and Windows too. It's an EC/firmware issue in the best case and bad HW design in the worst case. But, in case I'm wrong, it would be helpful if you could provide a list of kernel versions where there are no touchpad issues.

Seems to be some kind of hardware/firmware setting that requires that the fingers are way too separated to register a scroll or a two-finger-tap as a right click.

At the moment, I don't have a list of kernel versions that don't cause conflicts. I may not have explained myself well; I’ve been informed that they have confirmed the kernels that do cause conflicts.
However, as we’ve discussed, we are working on providing a solution.

In the meantime, we recommend using pinch-to-zoom and horizontal scrolling with your fingers, rather than vertical, as shown in the video. Also to remove the protective plastic.

Best regards.
