Some combination of Ctrl , Alt, Fn, with F1-F12 don't work anymore

Hello,

I have a slimbookk pro X 14, two years old, with kubuntu 22.04. Using Xorg.

In the last two days, various combinations of Ctrl, Alt, Fn with F1-F12 don't work.

For example, if I do: Ctrl+Alt+F2 or so, it is interpreted as to put the laptop in sleep mode or lock it, instead of doing the right thing. If I press Fn+F6, to lower the keyboard light, it does nothing. And so on, with other combinations.

Hope it is a software problem! I didn't change anything in the configuration. I tried with an external keyboard, and Ctrl and Alt work (the external keyboard does not have Fn). Someone has any clue about this issue and can help me?

Thank you!

Lorenzo

Hello,

I solved the problem by myself: somehow, but I don't understand why, the default option in the system to toggle the Function key behaviour with F1-F12 changed to Enabled. I disabled it from BIOS. Note that it was impossible to do that without going to the BIOS (some alternative options are proposed in various forums, they didn't work for this case).

Cheers,

Lorenzo

Good morning Lorenzo,

Yes, the only way to change this is from the BIOS.
Have you updated the BIOS and EC recently?
If not, the only possible option to reset some BIOS settings is that the CMOS battery has low voltage and is not able to save this.
If you have any other problems, you can contact us through a ticket.

Good morning Eusebio,

thank you for the help!

I didn't update BIOS and EC. I noticed that, after disabling the Fn option in the BIOS and turning off the laptop, when turn on again the laptop (after ~one day, the Function key behaviour changes again to Enabled.

The status of the battery is:

upower -i /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT0

 native-path:          BAT0
 vendor:               OEM
 model:                standard
 serial:               00001
 power supply:         yes
updated:              Mon 09 Dec 2024 10:23:54 AM CET (18 seconds ago)
 has history:          yes
 has statistics:       yes
 battery
   present:             yes
   rechargeable:        yes
   state:               fully-charged
   warning-level:       none
   energy:              38.76 Wh
   energy-empty:        0 Wh
   energy-full:         38.76 Wh
   energy-full-design:  46.74 Wh
   energy-rate:         0 W
   voltage:             12.666 V
   charge-cycles:       N/A
   percentage:          100%
   capacity:            82.9268%
   technology:          lithium-ion
   icon-name:          'battery-full-charged-symbolic'

I am not sure if this is ok (it seems so... the capacity decreased to ~83% in the last 3 months, but it is still acceptable. No idea about the information I can get from voltage, that is if this is the expected value).

Anyway, I think this problem is not urgent anymore, I can survive with this new behaviour: I just have to use the combination of all these keys in a different way.

Thank you!

Best regards,

Lorenzo

Good afternoon lorenzo,

I'm not referring to the laptop battery, I am referring to the CMOS BIOS battery, it is in charge of saving the BIOS settings, etc.
The problem you are having is because this battery is being consumed and is no longer able to maintain the settings that you save, so it restarts at each power on.
Here is a link if you want to buy a new one: https://slimbook.com/en/shop/product/kts-cr2016w-cmos-battery-bios-3-0v-prox-executive-1091#attr=

Kind regards,
