Cannot use the GPU in the Hero

Avatar
aronkvh

Hi,

I just bought a Slimbook Hero and installed openSUSE Tumbleweed on it. The performance switch button doesn't do anything. I don't know what to install to switch to NVIDIA.

I installed slimbook notifications, nvidia drivers and suse-prime already.

I could manage to launch some apps with the gpu.

However, the performace mode switch still doesn't do anything. What else do I need to install to make the button work?

How can I check which apps are using the dGPU and which aren't?

Hello @aronkvh,

The performance switch button (the one next to the power button) only changes the behavior of the CPU TDP and increases the fan speed to improve dissipation, but it does not change GPU performance.

Additionally, you need to keep in mind that not all Linux distributions behave the same way with Nvidia GPUs when switching from dGPU to iGPU. Therefore, the only thing I can suggest is to try Manjaro, which does provide good support in this aspect, and see if the dGPU works correctly there. This test is simply to rule out a physical problem with the Hero.

Anyway, when launching game (for example), do you notice that the performance is not as expected?

Best regards.

Thanks for the answer, I misunderstood what the button does then.

I could manage to get GPU performance, I had to disable secure boot for the driver to load.

If I press the performance switch button, nothing visible happens. The Plasma battery applet still shows the power profile I set previously. slimbookindicator is running. How can I check which apps are using the dGPU and which aren't?

I could just reinstall with Manjaro if I can't find a solution, thank you for the suggestion.

Good afternoon, aronkvh,

I'm glad to hear that you found a way to get the GPU working.

To ensure the "Performance" button works correctly, you need to install Slimbook Service. You can do this by following our tutorial:
https://slimbook.com/en/blog/guides-2/post/slimbook-service-364

Regarding how to find out which applications use the GPU, I can't say how to do it in openSUSE, but I can tell you for Ubuntu or Fedora. You can install the Mission Center flatpak, which is a very similar application to the Windows Task Manager. It shows the usage of different components in real time, such as the dGPU, iGPU, CPU, RAM, etc.

If that doesn't work, I recommend using Manjaro. You can download the ISO with all the drivers ready to work on your Hero from here:
https://slimbook.com/downloads?ruta=-Operating-Systems/Manjaro/Hero/

In any case, we're here if you have more questions.

Best regards,

Installing slimbookindicator was the first thing I did, but it doesn't work.

I guess I'll have to reinstall with Manjaro.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

I tried installing the ISO you linked, but I didn't see an option to set a password. After I install it, I don't know the default password, so I cannot do anything ("slimbook", "manjaro" or "root" doesn't work).

I'd like to ask if you have plans to support the performance button switch on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. I'd rather avoid Manjaro for my install, but if you don't have plans for Tumbleweed or Fedora, I'll have to move distros.

Hello aronkvh,

To install Manjaro, you need to follow the first installation steps. Once the installation is complete, you should restart the system. If a password window appears after the restart you need to enter "oem" without the quotation marks.

After getting past the OEM window, create your user and password, and then restart one last time.

I'm sorry I didn't mention this before.

Regarding support for OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, at the moment we are working on other projects that require more attention, but rest assured we will try to provide support when possible.

Best regards, and sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks for the password. I didn't get the installer finish steps until I could enter the correct password.

The password prompt was full screen and the install process was a bit hard to do: the scaling was set to 100% so everything was really small. I also got this error from the package manager instantly after rebooting: Failed to syncronize databases.

The package manager says "No package found" for the repositories page and other app pages. Manjaro also crashes around 3 times while updating for the first time, now all my applications are missing from the task manager and the launcher so I can't browse my apps.

Your collegaues said that Slimbook Battery and Slimbook Intel Controller cause performace issues on the Hero, but these are still installed on the ISO you provided. How would a user know whether to use these or not then?

The performance switch still doesn't work automatically, I have to run "slimbookservice" in the terminal to get it to work.

The keyboard backlight color always resets to blue if I change the brightness from the keyboard.

Sorry for complaining a lot, I know these are software issues, but to be honest I expected a better experience out of the box. I understand that you can't support many distros, but even the ISO you provided has quite a few problems. It might make sense to include which distros the device actually supports on your website.

Good morning,

We are sorry that there are several errors in the Manjaro Slimbook ISO, this ISO is not maintained by us and we are waiting for Manjaro to provide us with an improved version.
Best regards,

I have a related question as I'm still having problems with Manjaro:

Does Slimbook Service actually set the power profile, or is that handled on a hardware/firmware level and slimbookindicator only shows the notification?

Good morning,

Correct, Slimbook Service simply notifies that the performance profile has been changed, but it should also be changed via hardware.

In any case, you can ensure it is set permanently by accessing the BIOS and changing the profile from there.

Best regards.

Hello,

It's very unusual that the monitor still isn't being detected.
Please note that video output via USB-C does not work; you have to use HDMI or Mini-DisplayPort.

Can you confirm that you are trying to get a picture through HDMI or Mini-DisplayPort?

Best regards.

Hi,

I am using the HDMI port only.

On Tumbleweed, I sometimes need to run kwin_wayland --replace to get the monitor to work, but on Manjaro that also doesn't work.
