Samsung NVMe disks problems, firmware update recommended
Hello everyone,
Unfortunately, all brands and products can fail, and for some time now, we have been having problems with Samsung disks. In the following lines we give you instructions to solve the problem, but if you don't dare, we can do it ourselves at the technical service, contact us at [email protected]

It is strongly recommended to update the firmware of Samsung NVMe's, as you can see in the Youtube videos, they all end up failing eventually.

The problem:

Users are reporting SSD failures, write problems, temperature problems, SSD recognition error, etc.

Fortunately, Samsung has released an update that fixes the problem before the errors start. Unfortunately if your drive has already stopped working it is unrecoverable.

There is no official information from Samsung about the scope, but due to the large number of affected users, some of these errors have already been pointed out by Youtubers like JayzTwoCents (3.9 million subscribers), or NASCompares (93 thousand followers).

The drives that may be affected currently, to the best of our knowledge and from the ones we have sold, are:

Samsung SSD 960 EVO

Samsung SSD 960 PRO

Samsung SSD 970 EVO

Samsung SSD 970 EVO PLUS

Samsung SSD 980

Samsung SSD 980 PRO

Samsung SSD 990 PRO

The solution for Windows:

Samsung provides the only known solution for Windows. The process is simple but requires a Windows operating system. You need to download the Samsung Magician software, and when it detects the SSD, it will prompt you for an update (if there is any).

We recommend to do a complete backup before proceeding with the update to avoid potential data loss in case of something going wrong.

Important note: For Samsung Magician to detect your SSD, it must be connected to the M.2 port on your motherboard. An external USB adapter will not work.

If you're unsure about the process, follow the steps in the following video:

Solution for Linux:

We have prepared a script available on our GitHub here: https://github.com/Slimbook-Team/samsung/

Remember to create a backup of your data just in case. When running the script, it will display your drive, for example, "980 PRO," and then prompt you to select the firmware for your specific model. Be sure to choose the correct firmware version; selecting the wrong one can cause issues.

For example, if you have a 970 EVO Plus with firmware 2B2QEXM7, it does not require an update because it is not affected. However, if you have firmware 3B2QEXM7, you should update it to 4B2QEXM7.

Note to 970 EVO Plus users: If you have 2B2QEXM7 firmware that’s the latest updated version, only if you happend to have the 3B2QEXM7 firmware then you can update to 4B2QEXM7

To check your firmware version, use the following command: sudo fwupdmgr get-devices

An alternative method that some customers have used with Linux distributions not compatible with the script is to boot from a LiveUSB of Ubuntu 22 and run our script again, without mounting the disk drive.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Best regards.
